    Let \(T_{\phi}\zeta =P(\phi \zeta)\) be a Toeplitz operator on \(H^ 2(R)\) with symbol \(\phi\). If X denotes a compact Hausdorff space then \(x+t\) is the translate of an x in X by a t in R and (X,R) is a flow. Let also \(T^ x_{\phi}\) be a Toeplitz operator with symbol \(\phi_ x:\phi_ x(t)=\phi (x+t)\), and \({\mathfrak T}_ x\) be the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(\{T^ x_{\phi}:\phi\in c(X)\}\). The authors investigate the connection between spectral properties of \(T_{\phi}\) and dynamical properties of the flow. The main result gives the following Theorem: Suppose that (X,R) is minimal and that m is an invariant ergodic probability on X. Then i) The map \(T^ x_{\phi}\to T^ m_{\phi}\), \(\phi\in C(X)\), extends to a \(C^*\)-isomorphism from \({\mathfrak T}_ x\) onto \({\mathfrak T}_ m\) for each \(x\in X\). In particular, all the \({\mathfrak T}_ x's\) are isomorphic. ii) For \(\phi\in C(X)\), \(T^ m_{\phi}\) is a Breuer-Fredholm operator in \({\mathfrak R}\) if and only if \(\phi \in C(X)^{-1}\). In this case, the Breuer-Fredholm index of \(T^ m_{\phi}\), index \({\mathfrak T}^ m_{\phi}\), is \(-\mu (\phi,m)\). iii) If (X,R) is strictly ergodic, so that m is the unique probability measure on X and if \(\mu\) (\(\cdot,m)\) is an injective homomorphism of \(H^ 1(X,{\mathbb{Z}})\) then for \(\phi\in C(X)\) and \(x\in X\), \(T^ x_{\phi}\) (or \(T^ m_{\phi})\) is invertible if and only if \(\phi \in C(X)^{-1}\) and \(\mu (\phi,m)=0\). Here \(\mu\) (\(\phi\),m) in the topological index of \(\phi\).
