Authors' introduction: ``Recently the authors [Int. J. Theor. Phys. 29, No. 1, 57--73 (1990; Zbl 0698.53020)] introduced a new geometrical structure, called cosymplectic structure. This structure, which is based on a symmetric bilinear form of signature zero, leads to a geometry that is in many respects analogous to the symplectic geometry. Its usefulness lies principally in the fact that it provides scope for the geometrization of a number of familiar structures in physics which are not so easily amenable by the methods of symplectic geometry. The present paper is organized as follows. In Section 2 a brief review of some important aspects of this structure are given. In Section 3 a cosymplectic structure on the cotangent bundle \(T^*M\) of an arbitrary manifold M is given. In Section 4, associated symplectic and cosymplectic structures are defined and it is shown how a new cosymplectic structure can be obtained from a given one and an arbitrary Riemannian structure on the configuration space. In Section 5 it is outlined how real symplectic and cosymplectic structures both arise naturally in the context of complex symplectic manifolds. Finally some implications of these results for polarizations in geometric quantization are considered.
