    The evolution equation \(D_ tu=\Lambda u\), u is \({\mathbb{C}}^ m\)-valued on \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with \(D_ t=(1/i)\partial /\partial t\), \(\Lambda =E(x)^{-1}\sum^{n}_{j=1}A_ j(1/i)\partial /\partial x_ j\), \(A_ j\) constant Hermitian \(m\times m\) matrices, E(x) a positiv definite matrix, is considered as a perturbation of \(D_ tu=\Lambda_ 0u\), where \(\Lambda_ 0\) has the same form as \(\Lambda\) with E() replaced by a constant positive matrix \(E_ 0\) satisfying \[ | \partial_ x^{\alpha}(E(x)-E_ 0)| \leq C<x>^{-\partial -| \alpha |}(\delta >0). \] The existence of modified wave operators in the sense of \textit{L. Hörmander} [Math. Z. 146, 69-71 (1976; Zbl 0319.35059)] is proved under conditions which include the Maxwell equations for biaxial crystals.
