      The authors study the direct and the inverse scattering problem for the hyperbolic system \[ \sigma \partial \psi (x,t)/\partial t-\partial \psi (x,t)/\partial x=U(x,t)\psi (x,t),\quad t\in {\mathbb{R}},\quad x>0, \] where \(\psi =(\psi_ 1,\psi_ 2,\psi_ 3)\), \(\sigma =diag(\xi_ 1,\xi_ 2,\xi_ 3)\) is a constant matrix, \(\xi_ 1>\xi_ 2>0>\xi_ 3\) and U(t,x) is a matrix-valued potential with vanishing diagonal elements. Considering two problems with different boundary data, it is proven the existence of the scattering operator and a uniqueness result for the inverse scattering problem.
