By a straightforward argument the authors show that (a) if the Stone- Čech remainder \(\omega^*\) cannot be covered by \({\mathfrak c}\)-many nowhere dense subsets of \(\omega^*\), then no union of \({\mathfrak c}\)-many nowhere dense subsets of \(\omega^*\) contains ultrafilters of each type; and (b) if \(\omega^*\) contains no P-points, then some nowhere dense subset of \(\omega^*\) contains ultrafilters of each type. Thus the question of the existence of a nowhere dense subset of \(\omega^*\) which contains an ultrafilter of each type is independent of the axioms of ZFC.
