For integral equations with periodic kernels H(t,\(\tau\)) which have dominating mixed partial derivatives \(\partial^{2r}/\partial t^ r\partial \tau^ r\) the optimal information is obtained by the Fourier coefficients corresponding to the harmonics of the hyperbolic cross \(\Gamma_ M=\{(t,\tau);\quad | t| \cdot \tau^ 2\leq M,\quad | t| \leq M,\quad | \tau | \leq \sqrt{M}\}.\) The Fredholm equation of the second kind \(z=Hz+f\) is approximated by \(u=H_ Mu+S_ Mf,\) where \(S_ Mf\) and \(H_ Mu\) are partial sums of the corresponding Fourier series of order M. Its solution has the form \(u(t)=\sum^{4n+2}_{i=1}u_ i\ell_ i(t)+S_ Mf(t)\) with suitable coefficients \(u_ i\) and functions \(\ell_ i(t)\).
