In this paper initial boundary value problems describing the motion of viscoelastic media with memory in the higher-dimensional case are considered. Both the case of an incompressible and a compressible medium are studied, and in both cases it is shown that a unique local solution exists. As boundary condition it is assumed that the velocity of the medium vanishes. In the proof contraction operators are used.
