In the last period a refined linear theory of thin shells was developed, based on the Love-Kirchhoff assumption with neglecting of the radial stresses. For thick shells, the error introduced by these assumptions is quite large. In the paper is developed a two-dimensional theory for thick cylindrical shells, by considering the transverse shear deformations, the initial curvature and the radial stresses. The constitutive equations for thick shells are obtained and applications to circular arch subjected to pure bending and thick cylinder subjected to uniform pressure are given in the paper.
