Moore's balancing method of model reduction has many attractive properties but it suffers from the drawback that it is not applicable to unstable systems. In this paper, a balancing method of model reduction is presented for linear time invariant multi-input multi-output systems, which may be stable or unstable. The approach adopted is to balance and truncate the frequency domain Gramians. The basic philosophy of model reduction in the proposed method is the same as the conventional Moore's technique, but with the difference that the two techniques are based on two different types of Gramians. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the new approach.
