This is a very sketchy and superficial survey of Frobenius reciprocity. The author describes without any details how Frobenius was led to generalize H. Weber's theory of characters of finite abelian groups, by the introduction of linear representations of a finite group G, i.e. homomorphisms \(G\to GL(V)\), where V is a finite dimensional vector space. Then he states the Frobenius reciprocity theorem as a natural isomorphism between \(Hom_ P(V_ P,W)\) and \(Hom_ G(V,IW)\) where P is a subgroup of G, V, W two finite dimensional vector spaces, and IW the space of maps f: \(G\to W\) such that \(f(ap)=p^{-1}\cdot f(a)\) for \(a\in G\), \(p\in P\). He then mentions how that theorem was extended by G. Mackey to locally compact groups, and by Bott to holomorphic representations for complex Lie groups, a theory to which the author has brought some contributions.
