Sufficient conditions for local existence via Glimm's scheme for large BV data (Q810296)

The paper concerns \(n\times n\) systems in one space dimension \(F(u)_ t+f(u)_ x=0\) of nonlinear strictly hyperbolic type. Basing on the scheme of \textit{J. Glimm} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 18, 697-715 (1965; Zbl 0141.289)], the author obtains results of local and global existence of solutions. With respect to the works of Glimm and other authors, here large BV data are allowed, but some other conditions are imposed, in particular on shocks and contact discontinuities as in \textit{A. Majda} [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 275, 95 p. (1983; Zbl 0506.76075)]. For example, local existence is obtained for the 1-D nonisentropic \(\gamma\)-gas-law Euler equations, for \(\gamma <\gamma_ 0\cong 1.015\).
