Fixing a finite number of points \(\{y_ 1,\ldots,y_ n\}\) of a non- singular projective curve \(X\), a parabolic vector bundle on \(X\) is a triple of a vector bundle \(E\) on \(X\), a quasi-parabolic structure at each \(y_ i\) and a sequence of weights at each \(y_ i\). A quasi-parabolic structure at \(y_ i\) is defined to be a flag by vector subspaces of the fiber \(E(y_ i)\) of \(E\) at \(y_ i\). C. S. Seshadri introduced the notion of the stability of parabolic vector bundles and proved that if \(X\) is a compact Riemann surface, there is a natural bijective correspondence between irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group \(\pi_ 1(X\backslash\{y_ 1,\ldots,y_ n\})\) and stable parabolic vector bundle on \(X\) with parabolic degree 0 [\textit{C. S. Seshadri}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 124-126 (1977; Zbl 0354.14005) and (with \textit{V. B. Mehta}) Math. Ann. 248, 205-239 (1980; Zbl 0454.14006)]. He, with V. Mehta, constructed moreover the moduli spaces of parabolic stable vector bundles. In this article we generalize the notion of parabolic vector bundles to that of parabolic sheaves on higher dimensional projective varieties. Then we define the stability of a parabolic sheaf and construct the moduli spaces of parabolic stable sheaves. Here a parabolic sheaf is also a triple of a torsion free coherent sheaf \(E\), a quasi-parabolic structure and a sequence of weights. We fix, however, an effective divisor \(D\) instead of a set of points and hence a quasi-parabolic structure is now a flag by coherent subsheaves of \(E\otimes {\mathcal O}_ D\). Thus we should replace the parabolic degree by a parabolic Hilbert polynomial. We found that an intuitive generalization of the parabolic degree did not work to get the moduli spaces. In fact, we need a shift from \(E\) to \(E(-D)\), which gives the parabolic degree a difference by a harmless constant and which is one of our main discoveries. After we come to the correct definition of parabolic stable sheaves, the construction of the moduli space is done along a well-known way. \textit{M. S. Narasimhan} and \textit{C. S. Seshadri} found a bijective correspondence between irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental groups of a compact Riemann surface and stable vector bundles of degree 0 on it [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 82, 540-567 (1965; Zbl 0171.04803)]. A generalization of this beautiful result is the Hitchin-Kobayashi conjecture which had been stated in terms of connections and which was proved by \textit{Donaldson} in the case of projective variety. Our natural question is how we can generalize Seshadri's theorem stated above or what the differential geometric counterpart of parabolic sheaf is.
