Given an \(n\)-dimensional Stein manifold \(M,n\geq 2\), and a real number \(\alpha\geq0\), let \(\Lambda^ \alpha\) denote the \(\alpha\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure on \(M\) computed with respect to a distance function compatible with the topology of \(M\). It is known that a compact set \(K\subset M\) with \(\Lambda^ 1(K)=0\) is holomorphically convex and that a compact set \(K\subset M\) with \(\Lambda^ 2(K)=0\) is a Stein compactum. This article is devoted to establish suitable extensions of the above mentioned facts for the case where \(\Lambda^ \alpha(K)=0\), with \(\alpha\) being an integer in the range \(1\leq\alpha\leq 2n-2\). The following results are obtained: (1) If \(\Lambda^{2n-3}(K)=0\), then the restriction map \(H^{n- 2}(M;\zeta)\to H^{n-2}(K;\zeta)\) has dense image for every coherent analytic sheaf \(\zeta\) on \(M\) (which for \(n\geq 3\) means that the separated space associated with \(H^{n-2}(K;\zeta)\) is null). (2) If \(\Lambda^{2n-2}(K)=0\), then \(K\) has a neighbourhood basis \({\mathcal U}\) of open sets such that \(H^{n-1}(U;\zeta)=0\) for every \(U\in {\mathcal U}\) and every \(\zeta\) as above. (3) If \(\Lambda^{2q+1}(K)=0, q\) being an integer in the range \(1\leq q\leq n-2\), then one can, for every open neighbourhood \(\omega\) of \(K\), find a \(C^ \infty\) strongly \(\tilde q\)-plurisubharmonic proper function \(u:M\to\mathbb{R}\), \(\tilde q=n-[n/(q+1)]\), so that \(K\subset\{x\in M:u(x)<0\}\subset\subset\omega\). (4) If \(\Lambda^{2q+2}(K)=0\), then \(K\) has a neighbourhood basis of \(\tilde q\)-complete open sets (\(q\) and \(\tilde q\) as above).
