The Navier-Stokes equations in two and three-dimensional case are considered. The domain \(\Omega\subset R^ n (n=2,3)\) is assumed to be unbounded in any directions. The problem of the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions with respect to suitable norms is studied, with particular regard to the case of the \(L^ 2\)-norm of the weak solutions (weak solutions in Hopf sense). In the two-dimensional case, the results are near to ones already obtained by other authors for the analogous question in three-dimensional case. As far as the three-dimensional case is concerned, it is suitable to discriminate the smooth solutions from the Hopf weak solutions. For this last ones, only a sufficiently precise property of summability in time is proved for the \(L^ 2\)-norm of the solutions, with obvious meaning of this property. In the case of smooth solutions the result is stated for initial data \(u_ 0\) such that \(u_ 0\in L^ p(\Omega)\cap L^ 2(\Omega)\) for some \(p\in[6/5,2]\). The smooth solution \(u(x,t)\) corresponding to \(u_ 0(x)\) is such that \(| u(t)|_ 2=O(t^{-\beta})\) with \(|\centerdot|_ 2\) \(L^ 2\)-norm and \(\beta=(1/p-1/2)\) for \(p<2\). In the case of \(p=2\), there is only a property of limit: \(\lim_{t\to\infty}| u(t)|_ 2=0\).
