The authors explore the connections between braided crossed modules and reduced simplicial groups, thus reformulating results of \textit{R. Brown} and \textit{N. D. Gilbert} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 59, 51--73 (1989; Zbl 0645.18007)] in terms of the Peiffer pairings introduced by \textit{A. Mutlu} and the reviewer [Theory Appl. Categ. 4, 174--194 (1998; Zbl 0917.18004)].
