Let \(\mathbb{D}\) be the open unit disk in \(\mathbb{C}\) with the normalized Lebesgue measure \(dA\). Let \(d\lambda= (1-|z|^2)^{-2}dA\) be the invariant measure. For \(\varphi\in L^1(\mathbb{D})\) and \(r> 0\), define the average \[ \widehat\varphi_r(z)= {1\over|D(z,r)|} \int_{D(z,r)} \varphi(w)\,dA(w), \] where \(D(z, r)\) is the hyperbolic disk in \(\mathbb{D}\) centered at \(z\) and radius \(r\). The authors are interested in studying Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space \(A^2= L^2(\mathbb{D})\cap H(\mathbb{D})\), where \(H(\mathbb{D})\) is the space of all holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb{D}\). For \(\varphi\in L^1(\mathbb{D})\), the Toeplitz operator \(T_\varphi\) is a densely defined operator on \(A^2\) given by \[ T_\varphi f(z)= \int_{\mathbb{D}} {\varphi(w) f(w)\over(1- z\overline w)^2}\,dA(w). \] It is known that for \(\varphi\geq 0\), the membership of \(T_\varphi\) in the Schatten classes \(S_p\) can be characterized in terms of the averages and the Berezin transform of \(\varphi\). For \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), let \(A_n= \{z\in\mathbb{D}: 1 -2^{-n}\leq|z|<1-2^{-(n+1)}\}\) and let \(\varphi_n= \varphi\chi_{A_n}\). For \(1\leq p\), \(q\leq \infty\), let \({\mathcal K}^p_q(d\lambda)\) be the Herz space of all measurable functions \(f\) on \(\mathbb{D}\) such that \(\{\| f\|_{L^2(A_n, d\lambda)}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\in\ell^q\). We also say that \(T_\varphi\) belongs to the class \(S_{p,q}\) if \(T_{\varphi_n}\in S_p\) for every \(n\) and the sequence \(\{\| T_{\varphi_n}\|_p\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\in \ell^q\), where \(\| T_{\varphi_n}\|_p\) is the Schatten \(p\)-norm of \(T_{\varphi_n}\). We provide \(S_{p,q}\) with the norm \(\| T_\varphi\|_{S_{p,q}}= \|\{\| T_{\varphi_n}\|_p\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\|_{\ell^q}\). The main result of the paper is the following theorem. Let \(1\leq p\), \(q\leq\infty\). If \(\varphi\geq 0\) belongs to \(L^1(\mathbb{D})\), then \(T_\varphi\in S_{p,q}\) if and only if \(\widehat\varphi_r\in{\mathcal K}^p_q(d\lambda)\) for every \(r> 0\). If \(\widehat\varphi_r\in{\mathcal K}^p_q(d\lambda)\) for some \(r> 0\), then \(T_\varphi\in S_{p,q}\). In this case, \(\| T_\varphi\|_{S_{p,q}}\) is equivalent to \(\|\{\|\widehat\varphi_r\|_{L^p(A_n, d\lambda)}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\|_{\ell^q}\). As a corollary, the authors prove that if \(T_\varphi\in S_{p,q}\) and \(p\), \(q\) are finite, then \(T_\varphi\) is compact.
