The paper concerns a class of second order partial neutral functional integro-differential equations with finite delay in the form \[ \frac{d}{dt}[x'(t)-g(t,x_t)]= Ax(t) + \int_0^tF\left(t,s,x_s,x'(s),\int_0^sf((t,\tau,x_\tau,x'(\tau))d\tau\right)\,ds, \] where \(t\in [0,a]\), \(x(0) =\varphi \in \mathcal B\), \(x'(0)=x\in X\). \(X\) is a Banach space, \(A\) is the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous cosine function \((C(t))_{t\in \mathbb{R}}\) of bounded linear operators on \(X\), \(\mathcal B\) is a linear space of functions mapping \([-r,0]\) into \(X\) endowed with a seminorm and satisfying some specific axioms. The concept of a mild solution of the problem is defined using the cosine and the sine function which is associated to it. The existence of a mild solution is proved under rather complicated conditions on the entries of the problem and a uniqueness result is presented, too. At the end of the paper interesting examples and applications are presented.
