A group \(G\) is said to satisfy condition \((A,n)\) (resp. \((N,n)\)) if every subset of \(n+1\) elements of \(G\) contains a pair \(x,y\) such that \(\langle x,y\rangle\) is Abelian (resp. nilpotent). \(G\) satisfies \((N,4)\) if \(G/Z^*(G)\) is isomorphic to \(S_3\), if \(G\) is non-soluble and satisfies \((A,21)\), then \(G\) is isomorphic to \(A_5\times T\) where \(T\) is an Abelian group. Bounds for the index of the solvable radical and the Fitting subgroup of a group \(G\) satisfying \((N,n)\) are given, using a result of \textit{M. J. Tomkinson} [Publ. Math. 40, No. 3-4, 313-321 (1992; Zbl 0777.20012)] on coverings by subgroups.
