If \(1\leq p<\infty\), let \(L^p(0,1)\) denote \(\{f\) Lebesgue measurable on \((0,1):\| f\|_p<\infty\}\), where \[ \| f\|_p= \Biggl(\int^1_0 |f(t)|^p\,dt\Biggr)^{1/p}. \] The convolution \((f* g)\) of measurable functions \(f\), \(g\) on \((0,1)\) is defined by \[ (f *g)(x)= \int^x_0 f(t)g(x- t)\,dt= (g *f)(x),\quad 0< x\leq 1, \] and the convolution iterates \(f^{(*j)}\), \(j= 1,2,3,\dots\), of measurable function \(f\) are defined by \(f^{(*j)}(x)= (f* f^{(*j-1)})(x)= (f^{(*j-1)}* f)(x)\), \(j= 2,3,4,\dots\), \(f^{(*,1)}= f\). The Volterra operator \(V_k\) is defined in terms of the kernel \(k\) by \[ V_k(f)(x)=(k*f) (x)= \int^x_0 k(x- t)f(t)\,dt, \] and the operator iterates \(V^m_k\), \(m= 1,2,3,\dots\), are representable by \(V^m_k(f)(x)= \int^x_0 k^{(*,m)}(x- t)f(t)\,dt\). The main results of this paper include the following statements. If \(k\in L^1(0,1)\) is representable as \(k(t)= t^r\kappa(t)\), where \(r> -1\), \(\kappa(0)\neq 0\), \(\kappa\) has derivative \(\kappa'(0)\) at \(t= 0\), and if \(h(t)= \kappa(0) t^r e^{(\kappa'(0)/\kappa(0))t}\), then for all parameters \(p\), \(1\leq p<\infty\), the asymptotic relation \(V^m_k\sim V^m_h\) (as \(m\to\infty\)) is valid, so that \(\| V^m_k- V^m_h\|_{p\to p}/\| V^m_k\|_{p\to p}\to 0\) (as \(m\to\infty\)), where \(\| T\|_{p\to p}\) is the norm of operator \(T: L^p(0,1)\to L^p(0,1)\). Statements of the introduction of the paper indicate that results of earlier papers by the author and various others involve similar asymptotic estimates for special cases of the Volterra operators in \(L^2(0,1)\).
