Let \(n\) be a natural number. Let \(V_n\) denote the set of all spherical polynomials \(P\) of the form \(\sum_{k=0}^n \sum_{j=-k}^k \alpha_k Y^j_k\), where \(Y^j_k\) are the spherical harmonics on the two-dimensional sphere. For a natural number \(s\) the space \(W^s_n\) is the orthogonal complement of \(V_n \) in \(V_{n+s}\). The authors construct a so-called fundamental system for \(W^n_n\), i.e., a collection of points \((\eta_j)_{j=1}^{M_n}\), \(\dim W^n_n = M_n\), such that the interpolation problem \[ P(\eta_i) = y_i, \qquad i=1, \dots, M_n, \] has a unique solution \(P \in W^n_n\) for any given set \(y_1, \dots,y_{M_n}\). Earlier contributions of different authors have dealt with the same problem but with \(W^n_n\) replaced by \(W^2_n\).
