The author discusses finite element methods for the problem of wave propagation in a fluid-saturated porous medium. The medium is composed of a porous elastic solid saturated by a compressible viscous fluid, and the fluid may flow relatively to the solid. Biot's low frequency dynamic equations are chosen to describe the problem with stress-given absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) on artificial boundaries and conditions on interfaces between the fluid-saturated porous medium and elastic solid. In the paper, a new kind of discrete ABC is presented, and a discrete-time Galerkin method is utilized for obtaining approximate solutions. The numerical results show that the method is effective. Two dilatation waves (fast P1 wave and slow P2 wave) and one rotational wave (S wave) are clearly visible from of computational results, which coincides with theoretical analysis very well.
