By using elementary techniques, one derives the master equation for a pointer Hamiltonian and one shows that it is consistent with completely positive dynamics. The key is to refer to the second order approximation of perturbation theory and to make the assumption of a Dirac delta function correlation for the dynamics of the environment. Decoherence of the density matrix so appears in quite a natural way.
