It is known by \textit{A. Loi} and \textit{R. Piergallini} [Invent. Math. 143, 325--348 (2001; Zbl 0983.32027)] that a closed, oriented, smooth 3-manifold is Stein fillable if and only if it has a positive open book decomposition. The main result of the paper under review is the following. Let \(M\) be a Stein fillable 3-manifold and fix a link \(L\) in \(M\). Then there exists a knot \(L'\) in \(M \setminus L\) such that the union \(L \cup L'\) is the binding of a positive open book decomposition of \(M\).
