The authors give a historical survey on the developement of non-Euclidean geometries. They are not only interested in the history but also in the implication for the change of the view of the world at the end of the 19th century and for the impact on paintings in the 20th century. The authors discuss the importance of the existence of non-Euclidean geometries for philosophy and physics and thus show that here one has not only a discussion on different mathematical models as one would have today but that mathematics (at least geometry) was to describe the world in a new way.
