The paper studies dendroids which admit open selections. Specifically, given a dendroid \(X\), let \(C(X)\) denote the hyperspace of all of its subcontinua endowed with the Hausdorff metric. A selection is a mapping \(s:C(X)\to X\) such that \(s(A)\in A\) for each \(A\in C(X)\). It is an open selection if, additionally, \(s({\mathcal U})\) is open in \(X\) whenever \({\mathcal U}\) is open in \(C(X)\). A smooth fan is a subcontinuum of the cone over the Cantor set. Main result: A smooth fan admits an open selection if and only if \(X\) is locally connected.
