Let \(G\) be a finite \(2\)-group and \(\Phi(G)\) its Frattini subgroup. By Burnside, if \(\Phi(G)\) is nonabelian, then \(|\Phi(G)|\geq 16\). The author considers in detail the \(2\)-groups \(G\) with nonabelian \(\Phi(G)\) of order \(16\). There are exactly two possibilities for \(\Phi(G)\): \(\Phi(G)=M\times C\), where \(C\) is of order \(2\) and \(M\) is one of the two nonabelian groups of order \(8\). It is proved that \(G=HC\), where \(H\) and \(C\) are normal in \(G\), \(A=H\cap C\) is either elementary Abelian of order \(8\) or Abelian of type \((4,2)\), \(C_G(A)=C\), \(d(H)=2\), \(A<\Phi(H)=\Phi(G)\) and \(\Phi(C)\leq Z(\Phi(G))\) so that \(\text{cl}(C)\leq 2\) and \(\exp(C)\leq 4\). Next, \(H\) is one of six groups of order \(2^6\). In the proof Janko's deep result on \(2\)-groups with self centralizing elementary subgroup of order \(8\) and also a lemma of K. G. Nekrasov (if \(\Phi(G)\) is Abelian of type \((2,2)\), then \(\Phi(G)\leq Z(G)\)), are used.
