Given two \(C^*\)-algebras \(A\) and \(B\), a family of maps \(\mu=(\mu_t)_{t \in [0,\infty)}:A \rightarrow B\) is called an asymptotic homomorphism if it satisfies the following properties: (1) the map \(t \mapsto \mu_t(a)\) is continuous for any \(a \in A\); (2) \(\lim_{t \rightarrow \infty} \mu_t(a+\lambda b) - \mu_t(a) - \lambda \mu_t(b)= \lim_{t \rightarrow \infty} \mu_t(a^*) - \mu_t(a)^*= \lim_{t \to \infty} \mu_t(ab) -\mu_t(a)\mu_t(b)=0\) for any \(a,b \in A\) and any \(\lambda \in \mathbb{C}\). If \(L(H)\) is the algebra of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space \(H\), then any asymptotic homomorphism \(\mu=(\mu_t)_{t \in [0,\infty)}:A \rightarrow L(H)\) is said to be an asymptotic representation of a \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\). By means of the above notions, the authors introduce new tensor norms on \(C^*\)-algebras: left asymptotic and symmetric asymptotic tensor norms. The latter can be considered as the minimal tensor norm on the category of separable \(C^*\)-algebras with homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms as morphisms. It is proved that the one-sided asymptotic tensor norm differs from both the minimal and the maximal tensor norms. The relations to semi-invertibility of \(C^*\)-extensions are also discussed.
