The authors study the spectral properties of a Schrödinger operator of the form \[ H(b) = \tfrac12[P^2_1+(P_2-a(x_1))^2],\quad P_i=-i\partial_x, \] on \({\mathcal L}^2(\mathbb R^2)\). This operator describes the behaviour of an electron in a unidirectional constant magnetic field (UMF) \(b\): The corresponding potential \(a(x_1)=\int^{x_1}_0 b\) is assumed to be polynomially bounded and satisfy \(0 < \overline b = \varliminf |\frac{a(x_1)}{x_1}|\leq \infty\). The partial Fourier transform with respect to \(x_2\) turns \(H\) into a direct integral of effective Hamiltonians \(H_k\) and the analysis of \(H(b)\) proceeds via the \(H_k\). The main results concern the band structure and absolute continuity of the spectrum. Transport properties i.e. localization in the \(x_1\)-direction and asymptotic velocity in the \(x_2\)-direction are also derived. In a second part these results are extended to ergodic random UMF's. Here the authors show that the energy band structure of the spectrum is almost surely non random. Conditions are also given that the spectrum is almost surely absolutely continuous. Correspondingly the motion is almost surely ballistic in the \(x_2\)-direction with localization in the \(x_1\)-direction. Examples for such random UMF's are Gaussian and Poisson measures with non-zero means.
