A new class of composite finite elements for the Poisson equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions is derived, via a two scale discretization: a coarse scale approximating the solution in the interior of the domain at a proper distance to the boundary and a fine scale which is used for the approximation of the Dirichlet boundary condition. The minimal dimension of the approximation space is independent of the domain geometry and this is especially advantageous for problems on domains with complicated micro-structure. For the composite finite element method the optimal-order approximation (up to logarithmic terms) and convergence estimates are proved, valid also in the cases when the exact solution has a reduced regularity due to re-entering corners of the domain boundary. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method is investigated by considering characteristic numerical experiments and the numerical results confirm the quantitative convergence behavior of the proposed method.
