Let \(\lambda_{0},\lambda_{1},\dots,\lambda_{n}\) and \(\mu_{0},\mu_{1},\dots ,\mu _{n}\) be sequences of complex numbers. The authors prove various generalizations of the well known formulae for the Vandermonde determinant \(\Delta(\lambda):=\det[ \lambda_{i}^{j}] \) and the Cauchy determinant \(\det[ 1/( \lambda_{i}+\mu_{j})] \). The following results are typical. Let \((m) _{k}\) be the usual shifted factorial \(m(m+1)\dots(m+k-1)\). For any complex \(c\) (and assuming no denominators vanish) \[ \det\left[ \frac{(\lambda_{i}+\mu_{j})_{j}}{(\lambda_{i}+c)_{j}}\right] =\Delta(\lambda)\prod\limits_{k=0}^{n}\frac{(c-\mu_{k})_{k}}{(c+\lambda _{k})_{k}} \] and \[ \prod\limits_{k=0}^{n}(k!)^{2}\det\left[ \binom{\lambda_{i}+\mu_{j}} {m}\right] =(-1)^{n(n+1)/2}\Delta(\lambda)\Delta(\mu)\text{ if }m=n\text{ (and is }0\text{ for }0\leq m<n\text{)} \] Some identities of \textit{T. Amdeberhan} and \textit{D. Zeilberger} [Adv. Appl. Math. 27, 225--230 (2001; Zbl 0994.05018)] appear as special cases.
