This is a contribution to ``abstract ideal theory in commutative domains''. Motivated by the concept of a divisorial ideal in a commutative domain, by abstraction the authors consider lattice-ordered commutative semigroups \((S, \dots,\geq)\) with identity \(e\) and zero, which is the least element, such that \((S,\leq)\) is a conditionally complete, algebraic lattice with residuals, in which the product of two compact elements is again compact. An element \(a\leq S\) is called integral if \(a\leq e\), and divisorial if \(e:(e:a)=a\). In this abstract setting, a theory of (archimedean) divisorial elements is developed. In particular, assuming a maximum condition on integral divisorial elements, for any integral divisorial element \(a\in S\) \((a\neq e)\) the following is shown: (1) \(a\in S\) is the intersection of a finite number of \(d\)-irreducible elements; (2) the Krull associated primes of \(a\in S\) are again divisorial; (3) \(a\in S\) can be written as an irredundant intersection of a finite number of \(p\)-components which are \(p\)-primal divisorial elements.
