An \textbf{arc} is a (topological) space that is homeomorphic to the interval \([0,1]\subset\mathbb{R}\). A \textbf{retraction} of a space \(X\) onto a subspace \(A\subset X\) is a continuous map \(r:X\rightarrow A\) such that \(r|_A=id_A\). If \(X\) is a metric space, consider the hyperspaces of \(X\) given by (i) \(C(X)\): nonempty connected closed subsets of \(X\) and (ii) \(F_n(X)\): nonempty subsets of \(X\) of cardinality at most \(n\), as metric spaces with respect to the Hausdorff distance between subsets of \(X\), where \(F_n(X)\) is called the \(n\)th \textbf{symmetric product} of \(X\). A \textbf{mean} of a metric space \(X\) is a retraction \(r:F_2(X)\rightarrow F_1(X)=X\). A \textbf{continuum} is a compact connected metric space with more than one point. A \textbf{subcontinuum} of a continuum is a nonempty connected compact subspace of the continuum. ``A continuum \(X\) is of \textbf{type \(N\)} (resp. of \textbf{generalized type \(N\)}) if it contains (i) an arc (resp. a subcontinuum) \(A\) and (ii) two sequences of arcs which (a) converge in \(C(X)\) to \(A\) and (b) are folded in opposite directions with respect to \(A\)''. ``A continuum \(X\) is of \textbf{COP-generalized type \(N\)} (and hence also of generalized type \(N\)) if it contains (i) a subcontinuum \(A\) and (ii) two sequences of arcs which each (a) doubly converge in \(C(X)\) via two sequences of subarcs to \(A\) and (b) are folded in opposite directions with respect to \(A\)''. It is known that continua of type \(N\) do not admit means [\textit{F. CapulĂn Perez} and \textit{W. J. Charatonik}, Houston J. Math. 33, No. 1, 261--272 (2007; Zbl 1128.54006)]. Among other new results, this paper shows by constructed examples that, contrary to the case of continua of type \(N\), some continua of generalized type \(N\) admit means while some do not.
