The authors introduce a general framework for constructing recurrent fractal interpolation surfaces (RFISs) over rectangular grids in \(\mathbb{R}^2\). In addition, bilinear RIFSs are defined over rectangular grids in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) without restrictions on the set of interpolation points or the vertical scaling factors. A formula for the box dimension of bilinear RFISs under the assumption that the vertical scaling factors have a uniform sum is presented. An example of a bilinear RFIS is given.
