A variety \(\mathcal V\) of linear algebras is \textit{almost nilpotent} if it is not nilpotent but all proper subvarieties are nilpotent. The authors present the results obtained in recent years about almost nilpotent varieties and their classification. So, they present nine almost nilpotent varieties in different classes of linear algebras, denoted as \(\mathcal V_j\), \(j=0,\ldots,8\). Next, the authors characterize varieties of subexponential growth in some classes of linear algebras in terms of these varieties. Finally, the authors present recent results on two infinite families of almost nilpotent varieties, one related to Sturmian words and with polynomial growth, other one of exponential growth. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1461.16003].
