\textit{C. Geiss} et al. [J. Reine Angew. Math. 675, 101--120 (2013; Zbl 1271.18013)] introduced a new type of categories, called \(n\)-angulated categories, which generalize triangulated categories: the classical triangulated categories are the special case \(n=3\). Balmer and Schlichting proved that the idempotent completion of a triangulated category admits a natural triangulated structure. In this paper, the author proves that the idempotent completion of an \(n\)-angulated category admits a unique \(n\)-angulated structure such that the inclusion is an \(n\)-angulated functor, which satisfies a universal property. This result gives more examples of \(n\)-angulated categories and generalizes a result of Balmer and Schlichting.
