The paper deals with nilpotent ideals in amenable Banach spaces. A Banach space \(N\) is said to \begin{itemize} \item[(a)] have the approximation property if for each compact subset \(K\) of \(N\) and each \(\epsilon>0\), there exists a finite rank operator \(F:N\rightarrow N\) such that \(\| F(x)-x\|<\epsilon\) for any \(x\in K\); \item[(b)] have the bounded approximation property if there is a constant \(M\) such that, for each compact subset \(K\) of \(N\) and each \(\epsilon>0\), there exists a finite rank operator \(F:N\rightarrow N\) such that \(\| F\| \leqslant M\) and \(\| F(x)-x\|<\epsilon\) for any \(x\in K\); \item[(c)] be an \(L^1\)-predual if there exists a positive measure \(\mu\) such that \(N^*=L^1(\mu)\). \end{itemize} A subspace \(E\) of a normed space \(Y\) is called boundedly approximately complemented if there is a bounded net \((P_\alpha)\) of bounded operators from \(Y\) into \(E\) such that the net \((P_\alpha)\) converges to the identity operator on \(E\) in the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets of \(E\). Let \(A\) be a Banach algebra and \(A\hat{\otimes} A\) the projective tensor product. Define a map \(\pi:A\hat{\otimes} A\rightarrow A\) by \(\pi(a\otimes b)=ab\) for all \(a, b\in A\). A Banach algebra \(A\) is called pseudo-contractible if there exists a net \((u_\alpha)\in A\hat{\otimes} A\) such that the net \(\pi(u_\alpha)a\) converges to \(a\) for each \(a\in A\) and \(u_\alpha a=au_\alpha\) for all \(a\in A\) and all~\(\alpha\). The main results of the paper are the following: \begin{itemize} \item[(1)] Let \(A\) be an amenable Banach algebra and \(L\) a nilpotent ideal of \(A\). Then \(L\) cannot be an \(L^1\)-predual. \item[(2)] Let \(A\) be an amenable Banach algebra and let \(L\) be a nilpotent closed ideal of \(A\). Then \(L\) cannot be a boundedly approximately complemented subspace of \(A\). \item[(3)] Let \(A\) be a pseudo-contractible Banach algebra and \(L\) a non-zero nilpotent ideal of \(A\). Then \(L\) does not have the approximation property. \end{itemize}
