As we know, the average and the Melnikov function methods are important tools to study the bifurcation of limit cycles or of periodic solutions of differential equations. In recent years the bifurcation of limit cycles of continuous or discontinuous differential systems has been extensively studied by many authors due to their applications to many physical phenomena. Hence these methods have been developed from smooth differential equations to piecewise smooth differential equations. In [the second author et al., Qual. Theory Dyn. Syst. 15, No. 2, 471--479 (2016; Zbl 1377.34056)] the authors established that \(k\)th order Melnikov function and the \(k\)th order averaging function for any \(k\in{\mathbb{N}}\) are equivalent for studying the number of limit cycles of planar analytic (or \(C^\infty\)) near-Hamiltonian systems. In this paper the authors study piecewise smooth near-integrable systems and they show that the Melnikov function method and averaging method can be used to produce the same number of limit cycles or periodic orbits for piecewise near-integrable systems in two or higher dimensional space. The main step that the authors used for the proof is to construct an appropriate change of coordinates, which transforms the perturbed piecewise smooth system into a periodic system.
