Consider distinct \(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n\in(0,1)\). The authors show that if \(0<\varepsilon\le 1/n\) then the \(n\times n\) matrix with \((i,j)\) entry equal to \(2/(a_i+a_j)-\varepsilon\) is positive definite. On the other hand, if \(\varepsilon>1/n\) and \(\varepsilon(a_1+\cdots+a_n)>1\) then the matrix is not positive semidefinite. They also show that, for each \(n\ge2\), the function \(g(x)=\sqrt{x}-\varepsilon x\) on \((0,1)\) is \(n\)-matrix monotone if and only if \(\varepsilon\le 1/2n\).
