The present paper deals with the Tanaka-Ito type \(\alpha\)-continued fraction maps, with their natural extensions, and with relations between the entropy and size of the natural extension domain. In the introduction, special attention is given to two types of \(\alpha\)-continued fraction maps which were defined in the papers [\textit{H.~Nakada}, Tokyo J. Math. 4, 399--426 (1981; Zbl 0479.10029); \textit{S. Tanaka} and \textit{S.~Ito}, Tokyo J. Math. 4, no. 1, 153--175 (1981; Zbl 0464.10038)]. Results of these papers, as well as their relation with other results including results presented in this paper, are briefly described. Some definitions and notations are recalled and properties of the Tanaka-Ito type \(\alpha\)-continued fraction map are given. It is proven that the set of full cylinders generates the Borel algebra. For the Tanaka-Ito type \(\alpha\)-continued fraction map, the planar natural extension map is investigated, as well as the existence of the absolutely continuous invariant probability measure and Rokhlin's formula are true. That is, the existence of the absolutely continuous invariant measure and its ergodicity are proven with explanations. In addition, relationships between \(\alpha\)-expansions for different \(\alpha\) are established.
