Since the IXth volume in the series `Handbook of Numerical Analysis', volumes are devoted to a single specific application and are for this reason called `Special Volumes'. This XIVth volume focuses on Computational Methods of the Atmosphere and the Ocean and serves to bring useful and important geophysical problems to the attention of mathematicians as well as to present useful tools developed by mathematicians. As such, it addresses a wide audience of researchers and is most useful to those which have some previous knowledge of the subject. The handbook is divided into 5 parts, namely I Modeling, II Nonlinear Methods, III Turbulence, IV Data Assimilation and V Analysis. Except for part II), which contains 4 chapters, the parts contains 2 chapters each. Part I, Modeling, features a chapter on FVM in Meteorology, and a chapter on computational kernel algorithms for fine-scale, multiprocess, longtime oceanic simulations. Part II), dealing with non-linear methods, contains a chapter dealing with bifurcation analysis for the atmosphere, the ocean and the climate in general. The remaining three chapters in this part are of more general nature as they focus on time-periodic flow in geophysical and classical fluid dynamics; treat momentum maps for the lattice Euler-Poincaré equation on the diffeomorphisms used in the investigation of nonlinear internal wave interaction in the ocean; and address numerical techniques for integrating stochastic differential equations in climate models, respectively. A chapter on large eddy simulations for geophysical fluid dynamics, as well as a chapter presenting specific modeling examples from the fields of oceanic flow and magnetic fields in planetary and stellar bodies form Part III on turbulence. Part IV presents an chapter providing an overview over data assimilation techniques for geophysical flows with examples, as well as a more specific chapter studying energetic consistency and coupling of the mean and covariance dynamics. Finally, Part V contains a chapter on BVP for the inviscid primitive equations in limited domains, and reviews the recently developed setting of the primitive equations of the atmosphere, the ocean, and the coupled atmosphere and ocean. All chapters of the book are self-contained, include references and, if applicable, mostly gray-scale plots. 31 color-plates are collected at the end of the book.
