A general principle in projective geometry suggests that varieties \(Z\) embedded in projective spaces with very positive line bundles should have a resolution of linear type. The principle is supported by studies of many authors on Green's conditions \(N_p\), which, roughly speaking, say that the ideal sheaf is generated by quadrics and the first \(p-1\) maps of syzygies are defined by linear polynomials. The author considers the \textit{Veronese} embeddings defined by powers \(L^\ell\), where \(L\) is a very ample bundle on \(Z\), and uses, as a basic invariant, the \textit{Castelnuovo--Mumford} regularity \(m\) of the ideal sheaf \(I\) of the embedding of \(Z\) given by \(L\), i.e. the minimum \(n\) such that \(H^i(I(n-i))=0\) for all \(i=1,\dots, n\). The author exploits the cohomology of Veronese embeddings of projective spaces, and its restriction to \(Z\), and obtains an improvement of some bounds found by Gallego and Purnaprajna, in the case \(L\) base point free. Namely, the author proves that the embedding of \(Z\) under \(L^\ell\) satisfies property \(N_{2\ell-m+1}\), when \(m/2\leq\ell\leq m-2\), while it satisfies property \(N_\ell\) for all \(\ell\geq m-1\).
