The book provides a comprehensive and systematic presentation of the mathematical models for the simulation of transportation systems and the methodologies for the analysis and design of these systems. Theoretical and operational aspects are presented in a rigorous and exhaustive framework, addressing a broad range of applications performed by researchers and practitioners. In the first chapters the preliminary concepts and application areas of modeling transportation systems are introduced and the theory of transportation systems is explored. The author establishes transportation supply models and treats random utility theory as well as travel-demand models. The subjects are presented with an increasing level of detail and complexity, e. g. developing from basic static assignment to transportation networks to advanced models for traffic assignment to transportation networks. After extending the previous results to intraperiod (within-day) dynamic models the focus is put on the subject of estimating travel demand flows. Finally some transportation supply design models are introduced and activities with respect to the evaluation and comparison of alternative transportation projects are presented. The appendix covers a review on numerical analysis. All the topics are presented with simple numerical examples as well as with references to real-life applications.
