The authors investigate properties of the exponents of the terms appearing in the splitting perfect polynomials over \(\mathbb F_{p^2}\), where \(p\) is a prime number. This generalizes the work of \textit{J. T. B. Beard jun., J. R. O'Connell jun.} and \textit{K. I. West} [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII. Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 62, 283--291 (1977; Zbl 0404.12014)] over \(\mathbb F_p\). Put \(q = p^2\). The new idea is to consider suitable (block) circulant matrices. The object of this paper is to prove the following result: Theorem 1.1: Let \(N\in\mathbb N\) be a divisor of \(q-1\), and let \[ A = \prod_{\gamma \in\mathbb F_q}(x-\gamma)^{Np^{n(\gamma)}-1} \] be a splitting perfect polynomial over \(\mathbb F_q\). i) If \(N\) divides \(p-1\), then \(A\) is trivially perfect, so that the integers \(n(\gamma)\) may differ. ii) If \(N\) does not divide \(p-1\), then \(n(\gamma) = n(\delta):= n\) (say), for any \(\gamma, \delta\in \mathbb F_q\), so that: \(A = (x^q-x)^{Np^n-1}\). In the erratum correct versions of Lemmas 2.17 to 2.20 are included as Lemmas 0.1 to 0.4. All other results of the paper are correct and do not need modifications.
