The authors introduce the concept of an involutory quasi-Hopf algebra. They show that over a field of characteristic zero any involutory quasi-Hopf algebra is semisimple, the square of the antipode is an inner automorphism, and the category of finite dimensional representations is a fusion category which has a unique pivotal structure with respect to which the categorical dimension of simple objects coincides with their usual dimension. It is proved that if \(H\) is an involutory semisimple quasi-Hopf algebra over the field \(k\), then the characteristic of \(k\) does not divide the dimension of any finite dimensional absolutely simple \(H\)-module. Also, if \(H\) is non-semisimple involutory, then the characteristic of \(k\) divides the dimension of any finite dimensional projective \(H\)-module. It is proved that an involutory co-Frobenius dual quasi-Hopf algebra over a field of characteristic 0 is cosemisimple.
