The paper deals with the study of split Lie triple systems and specially those which have a coherent \(0\)-root space. To explain the terminology consider a Lie triple system \(T\) with standard embedding \(L= L_0\oplus L_1\) (so \(L_1= T\)) and a split Cartan subalgebra \(H_0\) of \(L_0\) (a maximal Abelian subalgebra such that each of its elements is ad-diagonalizable). Next define the root spaces of \(T\) relative to \(H_0\) as usual: for any element \(a\in H^*_0\) (dual space of \(H_0\)) we write \(T_\alpha\) for the subspace of elements \(t\in T\) such that \([h, t]= \alpha(h)t\) for any \(h\in H_0\). The elements \(\alpha\in H^*_0\) such that \(T_\alpha\neq 0\) are called roots of \(T\) relative to \(H_0\) and the set of all nonzero roots is denoted by \(\Lambda_1\). We shall say that \(T\) is a split Lie triple system if \(T=T_0\otimes(\bigotimes_{\alpha\in \Lambda_1} T_\alpha)\). We say that a split Lie triple system \(T\) has a coherent \(0\)-root space if: (1) \([T_0, T_0,T]= 0\) and (2) \([T_0, T_\alpha, T_0]\neq 0\) for any \(\alpha\in \Lambda_1\). A root system \(\Lambda_1\) of a split Lie triple system is called symmetric if it satisfies that \(\alpha\in\Lambda_1\) implies \(-\alpha\in\Lambda_1\). It is proved that a split Lie triple systems with a coherent \(0\)-root space and with a symmetric root system is of the form \[ T= U\oplus\sum_i I_j, \] where \(U\) is a subspace of the \(0\)-root space \(T_0\) and \(I_j\) a well described ideal of \(T\) satisfying \([I_j, T,I_k]= 0\) if \(j\neq k\). Under certain conditions it is proved that \(T\) is the direct sum of its family of minimal ideals each one of them being a simple Lie triple system. The simple Lie triple systems are characterized by using as a main tool that of connection of roots in the setting of split Lie triple systems.
