The main object of study in this paper is a class of non-selfadjoint and non-dissipative perturbations \(L=A+iV\) of a (possibly unbounded) selfadjoint operator \(A\) on some Hilbert space \(H\). The main concern is the structure of the singular spectral subspaces of \(L\). The basic assumption is that the characteristic function of the operator admits a scalar multiple. The main tool is a certain generalization of the Sz.-Nagy-Foiaş functional model for dissipative operators.
