Measurement noise is a key problem in the application of dynamic responses for the purpose of structural model updating and damage detection. In the paper under review, the authors use a finite element model reduction technique based on measured modal data with a limited number of sensors for the purpose of statistical damage detection. A deterministic damage detection process is formulated on the model reduction technique, and a probabilistic process is integrated into the deterministic damage detection process using a perturbation technique. This is achived by deriving the first- and second-order partial derivatives of uncertain parameters, such as elasticity of the damaged member, with respect to the measurement noise, which allows the expectation and the covariance matrix of the uncertain parameters to be calculated.
