The authors deal with a mathematical model describing the fluid-structure interaction, where the structure is immersed in a fluid with coupling taking place at the boundary interface between the two media. The model is described by a parabolic-hyperbolic initial-boundary value problem for the unknown variables (fluid) \(u(t,x)=[u_1,u_2,\dots,u_d]\), (structure) \(w(t,x)=[w_1,w_2,\dots,w_d]\), and scalar pressure \(p(t,x)\): \[ \begin{aligned} &u_t-\nabla\cdot(\nabla u+\nabla u^T)+\nabla p=0,\;\text{div}\,u=0 \;\text{in}\;(0,T)\times \Omega_f,\\ &w_{tt}-\;\text{div}\,\sigma(w)+w=0\;\text{in}\;(0,T)\times \Omega_s,\\ &(\nabla u+\nabla u^T)\cdot\nu=\sigma(w)\cdot\nu+p\nu\;\text{on}\;(0,T)\times \Gamma_s,\;u=0\;\text{on}\;(0,T)\times \Gamma_f,\\ &w_t-a(\xi)(\sigma(w)\cdot\nu)=u,\;a(\xi)\geq 0;\;\text{on}\;(0,T)\times \Gamma_s,\\ &[w(0),w_t(0),u(0)]=[w_0,w_1,u_0]\in \mathbf{H}, \end{aligned} \] where \(\mathbf{H}\equiv [H^1(\Omega_s)]^d\times [L^2(\Omega_s)]^d\times \mathcal{H}_f\) is the finite energy space with the fluid component space \(\;\mathcal{H}_f=\{f\in [L^2(\Omega_s)]^d:\text{div}\,f=0\}.\) The main result is the contraction semigroup well-posedness on the natural energy space. The authors use a nonstandard elimination of the pressure term and a nonstandard usage of the Babuška-Brezzi ``inf-sup'' theory enabling a unified treatment including both undamped and damped boundary conditions on the interface.
