Given two commuting measure-preserving transformations \(t_1,t_2\), a \(\mathbb Z^2\)-action \(\delta\) is given by \(\delta:\mathbb Z^2\rightarrow \Aut(X)\), where \(\Aut(X)\) denotes the automorphims of \(X\), given by \(\delta (1,0)=t_1\), \(\delta (0,1)=t_2\) and \(\delta (n,m)=t_1^nt_2^m\). For an action \(\delta \), the action \(\delta ^{\times d}:\mathbb Z^2\rightarrow \Aut(X)\times \dots \times \Aut(X)\) is defined to be the \(d\) times product of \(\delta\). If \(T_1\) and \(T_2\) denote the (commuting) operators on \(L_2(X)\), the action defines a representation \(\Delta\) on \(\mathbb Z^2\) given by \(\Delta((1,0))=T_1\) and \(\Delta((0,1))=T_2\). Similarly, \(\Delta ^{\times d}\) is defined. Two representations \(\Delta\) and \(\Pi\), of two actions \(\delta\) and \(\pi\), are said to be equivalent whenever there is an operator \(\Phi\) such that \(\Phi^{-1}\Delta (g)\Phi =\Pi (g)\) for all \(g\in \mathbb Z^2\). Under the operator notation, the author analyzes the following problem: whether the equivalence of two representations \(\Delta ^{\times d}\) and \(\Pi ^{\times d}\) yields that \(\Delta\) and \(\Pi\) are also equivalent. The main result (Theorem 1.4) is proved for free actions (the action \(\delta\) is free provided \(\delta(g)(x)\neq x \) for almost all \(x\in X\) for all \(g\in \mathbb Z^2\setminus \{ (0,0)\} \)) and weakly mixing powers of operators.
