Category \(\mathcal {O}\) was introduced in 1971 by \textit{J. Bernstein, I. M. Gel'fand} and \textit{S. I. Gel'fand} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 5, 1--8 (1971); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 5, No. 1, 1--9 (1971; Zbl 0246.17008)] as a tool in the study of highest weight representations of a complex semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\). In this paper, the author reproves, in a purely algebraic way, several known results about the category \(\mathcal {O}\) obtained previously by using geometric methods. Some new results on the parabolic category \(\mathcal O(\mathfrak p,\Lambda)\) are also included.
